Wakesurf Board Care and Repairs

Let’s just get to the point: wakesurfing boards aren’t cheap. The average mid-range board runs upwards of $500. To make things worse, more advanced boards often sacrifice durability to keep them light and improve performance. The good news is that you can protect your investment with just a little due diligence and a few easy steps every time you ride.

Minimize UV exposure

The sun can wreak havoc on your board’s protective outer layer, footpad, and fins. When you’re done surfing for the day, get it out of the sun to prevent delamination (the process where the individual layers of your board’s material begin to separate).

Don’t store it in the car or covered boat

Not only does storing your board in the car or boat increase the chances of taking physical damage from banging around with your other junk, but long naps in hot temperatures are a surefire way to cause delamination.

Wrap it up

Just because your board isn’t in use, doesn’t mean it’s not vulnerable to damage. Grab a board sock to keep your board protected from the sun, other boating gear, and the world around it when it’s in storage or up in the board rack.

Keep it clean

Make sure to rinse and clean your board when you’re done surfing for the day. Your board can pick up all kinds of floating gunk and debris, not to mention sweat and sunscreen. This is doubly important if you’re saltwater surfing. Salt is a wakesurf board’s nemesis! Give it a rinse with clean water and biodegradable soap when you’re all done.

Fix small dings and gouges quick

Whether you bricked it while surfing or the universe conspired to assault your unsuspecting board, accidents happen. When they do, fixing it quick-like will prevent the damage from spreading or allowing water to penetrate into the core. Duct tape works as a quick "field repair" but once you're back on shore, get a proper board repair kit and give your board the TLC it deserves.
